Darlene and I get ready to wrap up our visit to Maine. What a memorable 13 days we had. We left Bar Harbor and headed back toward Portland via Highway 1. We went through small and very unique towns, each having their own style and enjoyable differences.
The first stop was Stockton Springs. We crossed the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. That tall fellow at the far end of the bridge is The Narrows Bridge Observatory. You can take an elevator up the glass towers and overlook the Penobscot River and the area. Since it was rainy and foggy, we did not go up.

We continued on our route going through Camden and on into Rockland. Both are pretty and quaint little towns with a country charm and feel. We stopped for lunch in Rockland and ate at Archers On The Pier. The restaurant had a beautiful view of the working harbor. The food was good and we both enjoyed watching the boats out on the water.

Archers was good food. We shared some Lobster Dip. Darlene had a Crab Roll and a bowl of Chowder. I had Haddock Bites and Crab Cakes. It was all fresh

We then left and headed on down the road to Wiscasset, Maine. It is like something out of a Saturday Evening Post Picture or a Norman Rockwell Painting; small, rural and one main street through the middle of town. We went into a couple of the shops that were really old five and dime type stores. The old soda fountain in the old Rexall Drug had just closed, but it looked interesting.

We left Wiscasset, Maine and headed toward Freeport; our final night’s stay. Coming into the town, we noticed a very old and somewhat historical cemetery; some of the graves dating back to the early and mid 1800’s. One very interesting grave site, Captain Issac B. Pinkham, stated died at sea December 28, 1880.

We rolled into Freeport about dusky dark and checked into the Holiday Inn. You always know what you are getting with a chain. This one was fairly new and worked out just great for a one night stay and then a seventeen mile drive into Portland in the morning and a flight home.
The next morning we took the short drive to the airport, turned in our rental and boarded the plane home to Trussville, Alabama. We gad a terrific trip and would highly recommend Maine be put on everyone’s bucket list. Follow my simple ideas and you can take tis trip or any trip you like. I hope these tips help you and encourage you to travel our great country. Plan early, pay as you schedule and enjoy scratching off your bucket list.
We ate at a place called Gritty McDuff’s. We were both pleasantly surprised. The food was good and the service was outstanding. We shared an order of fried mushrooms, Darlene had French Onion Soup and I had a meatloaf dinner. The meatloaf was made of ground beef, ground pork, and ground andouille sausage served with a potato pancake and squash. I would recommend it to anyone eating there.

After we ate we drove over to the headquarters of LLBean. This is a small city and was spread out over several blocks. Looked like a Bass Pro Shop on steroids. They are open 24/7.
