Our last day in Bar Harbor, we got up early in preparation for our previously cancelled whale watching trip. Just our luck upon waking, we had a notification the trip had to be cancelled again due to rough seas. Well we will catch a whale watching tour on another trip somewhere else in the future. Now our half day trip into Acadia National Park just turned into a full day. Turns out we needed the full day. This 27 mile loop is absolutely beautiful. We have traveled and enjoyed silky white sandy beaches on the gulf coast, duned beaches on the Atlantic, mountains and deep canyons of the Smokies and Blue Ridge, Rockies, and Teton mountain ranges. We have seen the Pacific coast of California, the depths of the Grand Canyon, and sprawling cities across our great country. Believe me when I say these sights have nothing on this loop around Acadia National Park.
“Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations. I will be exalted in the earth.” Psalms 46:10.
There were several moments when Darlene and I could feel His presence. Take this drive and you will have no doubt, it was God almighty that created this. No astroid or big bang could have made an area this perfect and this pretty. From Frenchman’s Bay Overlook to Thunder Hole and on to The Gulf of Maine overlook, the entire park was impressive. Even on a 58 degree foggy day we were amazed.
We took our time and made every stop to enjoy the views. First up Frenchman’s Bay Overlook.

Another view from Frenchman’s Bay
We went up a couple of hills and looked out over the ocean from atop Champlain Mountain and around to Schooner Head.

We continued on to Sand Beach and walked the trails above looking down from the rocks. Signs tell you not to climb on the rocks but people were all over them.

We walked along Ocean Path and watched the Tide Pools below and the crashing waves. Ocean Path has many trails with views.

Next was Otter Point and the very impressive Thunder Hole. It is aptly named as the waves crash the rocks, the echos sound like loud claps of thunder. We had a good view of the Atlantic Ocean and I highly recommend stopping here to walk around, look in awe, and listen.

We continued on around the loop to Gulf of Maine Overlook, and like most gulfs, much calmer. From there to Otter Cove and away from the wind and mist, we saw boats and birds. We then drove around to Hunter’s Head.

We exited the Park at Seal Harbor late afternoon. Many small boats were anchored and the little walkway had many beautiful shrubs.

We headed the short distance back to Bar Harbor ready for dinner. We chose Route 66 Restaurant in the center of town. The place was very nostalgic with many old souvenirs and decorations on the wall. They even had the old 1950’s and 1960’s tabletop jukeboxes on every table. I haven’t seen these since I was a young kid. Darlene had Seafood Alfredo (lobster, shrimp, and scallops). I enjoyed Seafood Newburg (shrimp, scallops, lobster, and oysters) and fries.

This was our last day in Bar Harbor and it was very memorable. Tomorrow we head back toward Portland and begin to get ready to head home. However, we do have a scenic drive to Freeport, Maine and the LL Bean Headquarters. Join me next time to hear about our final stop of our two weeks in Maine.
